The speedway guys have a neat cutoff switch, which is a pin, connected by a cord to their wrist. You come off the bike, the engine stops. How neat is this???



I am considering putting on on Tornado, who does not even have an engine cut off switch. I would like one that is not conspicuous. The idea seems perfect to me for many reasons.



a) IF I were to come off (god forbid) then it will cut the engine.

b) If somebody tries to steal my bike when it's alone, hopefully, they will give up if it don't start.

c) Sort of neat way to kill the engine.

d) If this were south america, where they stop you and steal your bike, then the engine would refuse to start when i got off.



The only bad point I have thought of so far would be, going to wipe your visor on that busy A road. (but remember to use other hand).



Would this be a neat idea, or I have missed something and it is in fact, a stupid idea???

I can only think it hasn't been implemented already on road bikes because of the reasons you say: the risk of unexpectedly cutting the engine when wiping your visor or giving hand signals (which I sometimes do if I want to make my intentions absolutely clear).



Going through your list:



a/ Good idea, although on any fuel injected bike the EFi cuts anyway if you drop it (don't know about Tornado, what is it?).

b/ I think most bikes these days are stolen by van, to give the thieves time to get round the security devices in a workshop.

c/ Why is it a neat way to kill the engine? You'd still need to switch off the ignition.

d/ Good point. In South America!



It's the accidental cut-offs that worry me the most.

Not for me I think. For one If I fall off the bike the least of my worries is going to be is it still running and the prospect of a mistake engine cut is also not good. The decomp stops mine with no issue so I can't see me installing one anytime soon.

There is a big difference between race and road riding conditions. If you're waving your arms about on the track you are off, on the road there are many other reasons to have arms waving about. However if you really wish to emulate race safety but obviously do not want to create a danger where none existed before then maybe this is what you could use with the lanyard clipped to your jacket rather than arms or wrist - http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/motorcycl ... ith-tether - similar used by my F2 sidecar racing acquaintance to isolate the battery in the event of an off

Option D - In South America, if the means of restarting the engine was attatched to you, they would simply cut that bit of you off and leave you short of a hand and a bike in all probability.

This is used on boats and should always be used on speed boats wet bikes & power boating Its ripcord is attached to your belt other end is plugged into the cut out switch. If the plug its pulled out it will kill the engine. For instance if you fall overboard you don't want a boat circling and chopping you with the propeller.

The other thing about a cutoff is, that at the moment, I only have the decompress, as the key lives on the toolbox (old bullet).
would be quite nice to cut power to stop engine, then turn key off and remove when I got off the bike!



I am only considering this at the moment, but a jacket one could be good. If I do ever slide or ditch and survive, I would rather know that my bike engine didn't go bang, as being an old enfield, the throttle stays in whatever position you put it in unless it's under a quarter open . Good for stunt biking and cruise control, but not good for anything else.
