Don't trust R.E.'s EFI diagram, It's wrong!


Look at the grey owner's manual image below. Bottom right is the low fuel sensor. Follow the bottom line from this, and it joins up with a wire marked green.





The green wire connects the front and rear brake switches to the tail lamp (brake filament). If the diagram is correct then the fuel sensor would only come on when you are braking! LOL!



I went to check Thunderbolt, and there was no green wire on the fuel sensor, but there is a red/white one. The last wire that the RE diagram crosses before the green wire is red/white.



Red/white is the wire that is switched on with the ignition. Therefore, I have amended my diagram to show the fuel sensor connected to the 'ignition on' +ve wire. This is obviously correct.






Therefore, EFI owners, take note that your owner's manual diagram may be wrong!

This diagram has been designed to be printed onto A3 or larger Paper. It is designed to either be put on the workshop wall, or be rolled up like a lost sea scroll, only more important of course! It will not display correctly on mobile smartphones, no matter what they are fitted with.

Hey, Scalyback, I'm glad you are doing this. I got my B5 yesterday and the first thing I did was look at the wiring diagram in the owner's handbook. It's hopelessly wrong because it's for the carburated, dual-spark version! No sign of the fuel injection stuff at all. What rubbish! So, which diagram are you using to base yours on? I ask because the one in the official workshop manual seems complete, even though the writing on the circuit diagram is virtually unreadable.

Trust me... The manual is very wrong. Much of it is fine, but wrong bits exist. Don't trust the wiring diagram, trust a multimeter and your brain!!!

This is taken from my Bike manual which is... Part No. 597440 /Qty. 500/ March '09



which is for an Electra EFI.



It has three diagrams, Ignition circuit, Starting and charging, plus Complete circuit, which is the one I am doing. I am now checking the diagram against the bike, and amending as necessary.



This is no longer a copy of the RE diagram, this is a re-work that I am verifying as I go along.

Great work, Scalyback. I've got a copy here called Part No. 597451 / Qty. 500 / May '09. Two months more recent than yours. If you'd like a copy I can email it to you. I don't know what the differences might be - there is no version history in the document.

Thanks Thack, that would be interesting to compare, especially with the low fuel sensor as above!



I scanned mine at 300 dpi.



Anybody got a manual from 2013/2014? This could also be of help with the project.



Next is to try and clean the graphics and redo the text. Gives me something to do on a wet day.

Cheers for that Thack, Just looking through it and noticed tyre pressure front at 18psi ???

Sure this is also a misprint or am i wrong?? Just don't trust any torque values printed, check elsewhere first..

That's what I thought, but in fact it's not a misprint. I keep my tyres (2010 Electra EFI) at 18-20 front and 28-30 rear as per the handbook recommendation and have done for 14,000 miles. Bike handles beautifully (I'm 154 lbs) I tried upping the front pressure but the bike gets very skitty at more "normal" pressures. Many other report similar on the U.S forum.
My W650 is right at 28 front, 32 rear. Strange but true.

More alarming, my owners manual suggests oiling the chain every 3,000 kms, or earlier as required..!
