The 500ES was introduced to the UK in 2002 but probably it was only a UK importer option. Nothing to stop you kick starting and riding off into the first left hander with the side stand down so maybe the switch was fitted to the stand regardless of electric start or not.

Hey, cool, Norm. I've never been to Australia but it looks like a remarkable place. And some of your cinema captures that strange, perhaps slightly menacing, feel of the natural landscape. I'm thinking of "Walkabout" and "The Long Weekend". Frank, I've got to be completely truthful and admit that my memory is unclear: my '02 had an electric start and a sidestand, but to be perfectly honest I can't remember if mine had a switch on the sidestand. I would have thought so, but I can't be sure.

Didn't realise my initial question would quite lead to this... Anyway it's a year 2000 Bullet 500 with an aftermarket sidestand from Watsonian Squire, bought some years ago. The cut out switch, Minda, is to stop the engine when the stand is down... for those awkward cornering moments. So, Norm was right that it would be difficult to diagnose something unknown. But the comments were helpful as they corresponded with what others not on the board had said and sent me in the right direction. Main thing for me.. it's fixed now. Ok, back to disappearing picnic girls for anyone who wants....

I have climbed to the top of the rock on a few occasions, it isn't that far from here and while it is a bit wild you couldn't just vanish there, never found any bones either lol
