I had the original dual sided 6" SLS on my Connie and that failed when I needed it (SMIDSY)and was swapped for a TLS.. Oh sacrilege.. It stops now though!

My old '58 500 Bullet had that double SLS brake, which actually worked surprisingly well once I'd stripped and re-greased the cams, cleaned the rust out of the drums and treated it to a set of new cables from our hosts. Said Bullet is now, coincidentally, in the hands of the same clever Frenchman who devised the 6" TLS conversion. Having given the thing a very comprehensive rebuild, he also now has a 6" four leading shoe front brake up front...

Had call to use my brakes for an emergency stop today. A dopey cow pulled out of a side road into the dual carriageway I was motoring down without looking and without the ability to even make it across. Slammed on both brakes and had to feather the back to avoid just skidding into her. She looked a bit annoyed at me and waved her hands to explain that the problem wasn't actually her total inability behind the wheel and that my ashen face was an over reaction and carried on. Just as well really as I was about to hop off and demonstrate the sort of damage that my bike would have made lowing into her door but using my boot instead.

Simon car drivers these days have no idea that there are old bikes out there with drum brakes and just think that bikes can pull up quickly and they are very surprised when you keep hurtling towards them with your eyes bulging

I suppose the main positive I got from the experience other than still being here to muse on it was that I pulled up pretty damn quick. The front brake never looked liked skidding but that also meant I didn't need to worry about loosing control. I'm clearly looking for the good story here but I do remember a similar situation on the Ducati where the dual Brembo discs locked up with my panic reaction and then I had a tank slapper to go with the threat of an impending crunch.
