Don't worry about the typing, mate! It's fine. I'm lucky cos I'm working of a desktop PC with a decent keyboard. They test the emissions for cars at MOT, and the later ones will fail (due to more stringent MOT criteria)if the cat is faulty or missing. I suppose logically they could introduce the same emissions test for bikes, but it's nice to know that they don't at the moment - gives us a bit more freedom. I think the cat is in the downpipe on the EFi models, so if I decide to change it, all I have to do is keep it in the back of the garage somewhere.

The Hitchcocks short pipe silencer with removable baffle fits on the existing pipe. It has a second support point that slides so it accommodates any differences in pipe length. Noise is never to be forgotten, but can make your ears ring if you are prone to tinitus. Weighs about 1/3 of the original as you are losing a lot of metal and the catalytic internals. Its the business.

Thanks for the info, @trevorch. I don't know what Rich (the OP) thinks, but I reckon what you've described would be way too loud for me. I much prefer a really quiet exhaust note, but one with a "deep", "rich" tone. The absorption silencer I mentioned earlier did just that, but it was seriously ugly.

The replacement silencer is a straightforward bolt on replacement. It is loud with the baffle in, and f***ing loud with it out. They don't like it much up Totnes high street. It's more blat than thump if you know what I mean. I preferred the sound of the Watsonian Goldstar exhaust, blatty again but with a delicious growl on the overrun which the Hitchcocks short pipe doesn't have. I'll be trying out their Goldie next I suspect.
There is a small but noticeable performance improvement over the stock silencer.
My 2010 G5 has sailed through both its MOTs with aftermarket pipes on.
