Wilf, i wonder if your coil is perhaps not as lively as it once was and perhaps a change to the german PVL may give more oomph on starting..

Also the copper cored HT lead if the existing one is that silicon one which degrades slowly until it fails...

Bit cheaper than Boyer electronic. Oh meant to say the other day check that rubber hose between carb and head for perishing/splits.

Air drawn in at closed throttle will cause problems with starting and tick over but ok at over quarter throttle..

Bullethead i thought about the Boyer as some kind of upgrade for when i have trouble with timing or bad starting through wear on the backplate etc But you know its worked faultlessly for the last five years with just usual clean up, lube and gap check, so i just can't justify it... I mean how much is a pair of advance springs or back plate.. Peanuts.

I was wondering about the coil alright Gwilly, what with all the tales of woe I read about on this forum re coils suddenly failing. I checked the rubber carb connector, which I'd renewed a couple of years ago and found it still in good shape. Since cleaning the carb (thoroughly this time), and ever so slightly advancing the timing she runs much better from cold and soon warms up and runs/ticks over perfectly. I can't help feeling that a more powerful spark would help to fire her up more reliably. I shall check coil for resistance, which as I understand it should be around 4 ohms in the primary. Thanks for your help, I'll keep you informed.
