... broken! Go on then, any tips on getting more life out of speedo cables? I think I am onto my 4th, possibly even 5th in 6 years.

First off never grease the inner cable it causes it to drag use a rub of ordinary engine oil on inner cable when inserting. Also make sure there is no sharp kinks toward drive end a nice curve is what you need. Get the better qulity Uk made one from hitchcocks cost more but mines been on there a few years no problems.

Yes, why not remove inner cable entirely !!....... They're not of any real use on a Bullet anyway....Just follow someone in front around town ( Honda 125 for instance) or select "Cruise mode" ie}--- 50MPH ---- anywhere else !!..............There you are then, one thing less to worry about !!! LoL...

Ha, Alan, that was what I did this morning Paul, good tip - I DO normally grease the inner cable, so I guess that could explain my high failure rate! Cheers!

Where is it breaking? Its sometimes difficult to get a smooth route out of the wheel gearbox and make sure its free at all points when the handlebars are turned lock to lock.

I can't remember for definite for the old ones, but I think it normally breaks right at the speedo drive at the wheel. That's where it went this time. No kinks, but I might try and rotate the speedo drive a little to allow for a slightly smoother cable route too.

Might be worth investing in a new drive and cable as a complete unit. This might sound sacriligeous - but there comes a point where a machine is economically not viable and it is better to buy (invest is the wrong word!) in a new ish one?

I'm not buying a new bike cos my speedo cable broke!!! Cables are service items, they have a service lifetime... I just want to know how to extend the life of mine. BTW the speedo drive is new, the plastic one which comes as standard is rubbish - the threads strip as you remove the cable.




Plus... don't we own Enfields so that we always have something to tinker with? It works(ish), it runs, I'll keep it running and save the planet whilst I am at it

Landfill sites bristle with enfield bits that failed, includung many off my new bike. Saving the planet is not an enfield core value.
