Fair comment, Frank. To be honest I haven't looked at the wiring diagram yet - I was just following a gut feeling, having read elsewhere how unreliable the ignition switch can be. I've now ordered my B5 and am about to order the workshop manual. When it arrives I'll be able to get a good look at the diagram, and then we can probably work out exactly where the problem is. Or is the wiring diagram published on-line anywhere?

Trouble with circuit diagrams is they can often make things look more complicated than they are. I once knew someone who armed with a circuit diagram spent hours trying to fix an amplifier only to find the socket he had plugged it into was dead. In this case if we assume nothing works when the ignition switch is off but some things work when it is on then the switch can't be to blame. Must be beyond.

Right.... I switched ignition on (in neutral) and still no light. Took out original neutral switch at rear of g/box and earthed it. Light lit up on panel. Put it back in and ..nothing. Wouldn't start on kick or electric. Pulled in clutch and she started perfectly. I've undone all bolts holding engine in place and retightened them in the event that's an earthing issue.
Left her running on drive for 10 mins - no problems. Went round the block a couple of times and she stopped. Electrics fine to lights etc as before but not to engine. Wouldn't start even when clutch pulled in.
I opened fuel cap and no sign of sucking air when opened. Pushed her home.
I've ordered new neutral switch off Xbay and new plug and coil from H/cocks.
Will fit switch first and see what happens followed by coil and then plug.

and she wouldn't start when I'd got home and no spark to plug when we took it out and held it against engine.
I'm an RE novice but on other bike makes, this has 'coil overheat' lit up in neon lights? Anyway guys, h'cocks are snding me a 2nd hand Electra X coil so let's see.

Faulty plug? as I said before I have not heard of an Electra coil failing. I carried one and a TCI unit under my seat for years through use of a fear of it failing because it is not like you could get these bits anywhere to get you going like you could on a Cast Iron. Was easy to carry a set of points and condensor in the toolbox
