why is it a good move?

well that's simpel its solid state, which means its almost (enfield) bullet proof.

the amount of miles or kilometers counts, not the years anything is used.
some do 40.000kl in three years other barely 4000km ore even less.

In reply to Thackers esoteric & others less so contributions. The points & coil on our 1992 Bullet was to say the least dire. Hit & Miss? More miss than hit, pure unadulterated shyte. No wonder it had 5 previous owners in less than 4 years & 4000 miles the last must have given up because he thrashed the thing until the motor grenaded. I very nearly skipped the POS. But being a stubborn old git I persevered, bit the bullet and risked good money on a Boyer system. Transformed a useless piece of junk into something we have enjoyed for many years now. Hence my cryptic yes answer.

The main reason I own Bertie is because he regularly needs attention , this includes checking the points and changing the condenser when it fails, if i want trouble free riding i go out on my 6 speed auto, computer controlled everything done for me, doesn't burn any oil Honda, don't get me wrong the Honda is great fun, easy to maintain and fantastic to ride but when i want back to basics plodding along Bertie it choice of the day, i would never consider swapping out my basic manual ignition system for the electronic version, to tell you the truth i would probably even convert the ignition timing to manual if i could, because sometimes i enjoy having to do things the ol' fashion way, its more involving than a modern ride, for me thats the point of owning a Bullet. Bertie runs fine with points, and if it ain't broke don't fix it.

I'm also thinking about fitting electronic ignition, hopefully to make starting a bit easier. After Gwillys help sorting out my carb,(see earlier post) starting is still a hit and miss affair, depending entirely on my sticking to the text book procedure. One false move/lack of concentration from me and the engine floods. I'm wondering if a supposed "better" spark will result in me being able to adopt a more relaxed approach to starting.

If I was offered a FREE electronic ignition kit for a Bullet I would stick with points every time and no I don't like to tinker with points and all that rubbish but if set properly points are fairly low maintenance

What's all this "regular maintenance" business?
My points get checked every 1500 mls when I do the oil change and "check round"
Very often they don't need adjusting.

Peter I admire your dedication to points maintenance but I would probably be more inclined to check them every 15000ks lol

Thanks for all the comments - and a few larfs too. I can now see the way forward: I will use points on Mondays and Wednesdays and electronic the rest of the time. Or maybe I'll stick with points and review again in a while. Seriously, thanks a lot folks.

To pick up on wilf's comment regarding cold starting, my experience is the same and in anything above freezing conditions the cold start "choke" makes the mixture far too rich. However, it needs some enrichment so I attempt one kick with choke on, then it will usually start with a second kick with choke off and a teeny amount of throttle. More than one kick with choke on just wets the plug. I also find it helps to bring the engine well past TDC - see the post "Kick starting...A new angle?" which can be found by putting that phrase into the search box (top right).
