1) My oil temp gauge used to say 60 C, but I had terribly sooty plug, so the old mechanic weakened it (bits in carb, etc.)
Now he runs at 70 C, but the end of my standard bullet exhaust has started to turn blue. Is he running too hot?

2) Tornado has Mr H's breather kit installed plus the oil temp gauge (version for breather). If you have one, then what temperature does your bullet run at?

3) Could somebody please check that I got it assembled all correct so that I know the dipstick is accurate, only there seems to be a lot of screw together sections!?

Thanks all!

What is the plug burning like now? If it is brown/tan then I would say it is running OK, white would be too hot. To me that would be the more accurate assessment of exhaust and engine temperature. Too many gauges monitoring this and that only gives more to worry about!

I would agree with frank Oil temp will fluctuate with the weather winter/summer much better to go by plug colour. Oil temp gauge is good for seeing you get wormed up properly in winter though to avoid condensation I have one on me work bull a five speed it looks like yours is correct as long as it dips in the oil OK. Easy way is measure to the original Dipstick length then add distance of the extra fittings that you put on that should equal the length of your new dip stick/oil probe aprox.

Think i would be doing a plug chop pronto just to make sure.. Maybe check he hasn't retarded the timing a tad too much. That will also blue up an exhaust and run hot..

Plug is still a little black, but no soot, I guess he needs de-coking by now..

It;s just that the exhaust looks to be very old, and it never went blue before! (first 6 inches).

I forgot to add, Tornado has a Boyer mark IV ignition system, so I guess the timing is ok, as I don't think Chris touched it. I will ask though.

Oh, and it's an Iriduim pug.

If anything I've found sn Iridium plug burns a bit whiter than a standard plug showing an ideal colour. Might be worth putting a standard plug in and using that as a reference.

Mine usually stays around 50/55C, It goes to 60/65C on hot Summer days of 32C. The probe fits through the oil reservoir drain plug.
It is mounted on the right -hand side indicator stalk so I see it at a glance whilst riding. Saved me wrecking the engine one day when I saw it moving towards 110C because of low oil level. I usually use NGK BR7ES plugs, or Champion. I have used an Iridium BR8EIX in the past for about 16000kms, only changed because it was a bit on the cold side.

Thanx guys!

will check the old and new dipstick for oil level, and try a normal spark plug.

will also check the timing system in case!

Will not know until I hit the UK again.
