If you remove the inner ratchet cover and if you can get somebody to slowly rotate the rear wheel and you hold the inner ratchet in place you can shift through the gears and you can see where the inner ratchet is not picking up the next gear. The only adjustment on the box is the adjuster plate, you can move this back and forth and continue shifting through the gears and hopefully you might solve it. Often I can't solve it so I then resort to welding and grinding the inner ratchet. Using this method you can get nice smooth precise gear change but it isn't an easy option and not for somebody without this sort of ability, and I have done it on many occasions, but then I have also spent several days working on some boxes to get them right after some Indian with a hammer and chisel has been in there

Tom,
I wish there was an easier fix but I haven't found it yet. I have made a plate to hold the inner ratchet in place so I can see exactly where to weld and grind, build the teeth up or move them slightly

Hi Norm

Well I just tried with the engine running and no change N - 1st - 2nd - N -1st - N... No 3rd or 4th and all gears select with Neutral selector.

I will have to whip the outer cover off and take a look..

Tom i think Dave is on the right track. If you can select with the finder then the forks/pinions and dogs are probably serviceable..

sounds like a selector ratchet problem, you have enough movement for the half shifts 1st to N and N to 2nd there is more movement required for 3rd which means the stop plate is not allowing enough movement up change or more likely the starting point of the ratchet teeth is wrong..

Remove the stop plate and in neutral check for equal gap between inner and outer teeth.

Also that the outer assembly returns to centre after lever movement..
Loosen pillar bolts and slightly move assembly one way or tother to equal by sight.

Trick is not too much or you lose the down shift whilst gaining the upward.. Refit the lever and see if the shift seems to complete..

if it does then tighten the pillar bolts and refit the stop plate.

Now test again and if not enough movement to fully engage then a light file of the stop plate is in order, again not too much, softly softly catchy monkey..

Agree with Norm, some work as well as an albion can whilst others are a real struggle with no obvious reason why... gwilly.

Hi Norm

Yes you are right i was forgetting the false neutrals :o)

Anyway all sorted now..

I loosened everything off and it all worked fine until I tightened the post bolts up.

I noticed the back plate was moving so I held the gear lever up to simulate going into first gear and then tightened the post nuts etc and everything seemes fine now.. Not very scientific but then it is a Bullet :o) All is wonderful once more in Bulletville!!

I look forward to the next tweak!!
