I find it imposible to select neutral from 1st or 2nd on the 5 speed box o my AVL engine Electra X. It's fine on the move and OK if I get into neutral before coming to a stop. My cable and clutch actuator lever inside the box is correctly adjusted. I do have double the quantity of ATF in the primary that is stated in the manual (about 800cc).Do you think all that ATF is causing the plates to drag? Would it better with just 400cc of engine oil?

Yes, you have answered your own question there. Drain it to the correct level and that should be a big help.

What was the reasoning behind having double quantity of fluid in the primary drive? Just curious

Putting double the quantity of ATF in the primary on electric start models was reccommended on several Enfield forums and Pete Snidel manual to help lubricate the sprag clutch which might give it a longer life.

Sorry Norm, but they're not.
If all is in order and correctly adjusted there is no problem selecting neutral at standstill.
Potboiler, I would have thought that the standard amount of oil in the chaincase is sufficient. It will be flung about pretty well by the chain.

indeed they do not all do that.

a have one myself and two on friends bikes, they all work perfectly.
be it in finding neutral ore shifting.

Must say I find ATF too sticky and therefore promotes drag and get better results with the manual recommended 15/40 oil, but I seem to be a lone voice on this.

I think the point is, Frank, that ATF oil is formulated to NOT be sticky.

On the matter of ATF, I've got the primary drive opened up for its' 4 yearly clean out and I'm tempted to try this ATF stuff. But, I see all sorts of ATF in our local car parts place, will any of them do? Don't want to start an oily thread again so a simple yes or no will suffice
