Out on the Electra - 45 min ride. All of a sudden backfire from the exhaust 'stuttered then died. Pulled over - all electrics ok (ie lights, horn etc). Waited 10 mins re-started all ok? Drove home (20 min ride).....Happened a few weeks ago so this repeat is worrying me.
Having done some research it sounds like it might be the coil. I see you can replace it but looking at it i take it you have cut the wire and splice the new one in? Anybody done this? I HATE electrics?

I have put a new coil on mine but I don't see why the splicing is required... the connectors just... connected. Are you sure it doesn't just LOOK LIKE that? Having said this, it might be different as mine's an older model, but I can't imagine the need to splice a coil on. Good luck, and let us know how you go on. Chris

The coil is plug and play, plug wire is moulded in and the 2 wires come out of the coil and have a connector on them

Right i took a look at it and was 'guessing'. Anything electrical fills me with dread. Time to get the spanners out and have a proper look. Thanks guys. I'm off on holiday now so i'll do it in a weeks time. I'll post my results (no matter how disastrous/comical)!

And there is always the chance it isn't the coil could just be a spark plug. I can't recall an Electra coil failing, even though I carried one under my seat all those years, that is probably why.

As per Norm go for the simple stuff first, i.e. change spark plug.. if still no spark then i believe there is a separate fuse under the seat which feeds live to the ignition module. just make sure is sound, clean and passing ~12 volts with ignition on.. Then move on to coil input and connections.
