Hi all. I've just acquired one of Mr H's reverse cone meggas for my 1996 535cc Classic. Goes very well and has a more muted sound and is a bit less harsh than the shortie silencer (91007) at half throttle or more but both are more loud than the OEM torpedo. Both aftermarket silencers sound lovely when accelerating but are both unacceptably and painfully loud. So I opened up the megga to see what packing was in it - very little and it has all been blown to the end of the silencer. Here is a photo (hopefully) from my photobucket account (Chris Davies, ChrisD200).

I need more packing and better fixed in place with wire looped through the hooles. Can I use glass fibre mat and if so, how thick?

Chris, the trouble with the fibreglass, either wadding or the stuff actually sold by Motorsports outlets for this job, is that it is just too fragile and needs regular re-packing. I've used stainless steel pan scourers, not the wire wool "Brillopad" type, but a coarser type of material, I don't know what it's called, sorry! Also a firmer method of retention than wire would be good (I haven't tried this though,) so what about chicken wire mesh?

could the insulation material be sandwiched between two pieces of chicken wire and the whole thing rolled to a cylinder shape and wired to hold shape..

material couldn't be blown down one end is my thinking..

For anyone who is interested, I have replaced the sparse fibre packing in the megga with half-a-dozen stainless steel scourer balls, stretched out and wired on with the wire hooking into the holes in the diffuser tube. Threy covered about 2/3 of the tube. All well, sound is muted but still a bit loud so maybe I'll try just a few more scourers. Interesting, my shorty silencer (PN 91007) is completely straight-through with just a tube of diffuser pipe surrounded by je ne sais pas, whereas the megga has a welded-in piece of the diffuser tube so giving about half teh air flow you'd expect. Maybe I'll punch a few holes in it with my trusty best tools (hammer and long screwdriver) to get a better flow. I'm going to cut the shorty open next.
However, sod's law, the alternator wiring has failed so I can't properly test it as I'm running on battery only. One step forward, at least one back. Cheers, ChrisD.

Alan - thanks for that comment. I've never seen that Wahtusi before - its quite bizarre isn't it. And the guy in the shoulders? On the high side though, the bike is going so well now (well most of it) and easily accelerates up a hill in 4th even with the 19T sprocket. Cheers, ChrisD (from Cape Town).

Can you imagine a 'celebrity' today with a name like Lawrence Welk with his own show on tv? I assume that he didn't change his name in order to help his career, like Reg Dwight did. (apologies to any Enfield riders called Lawrence Welk..........)

I like the girl on the R/H side best !!--------- that was in 1962, which makes them all pensioners now ( and thus eligible to be an Enfield owner !!)----Now that's BOUND to upset someone on here ??.............My No.1 Enfield has the std. 4-speed box with a 19t gearbox sprocket as well along with an up-jetted Mikcarb, Tea-caddy filter and short, sausage-type silencer and Std. CR piston....Seems to cruise quite happily on the open road whilst gives a tractable performance around town.....No.2 Bullet is in the process of having a 5-speed box fitted........
