Just had another go at my twisted forks. Removed wheel, slackened everything except steering head nut, and released each fork leg by about one turn of the big Allen screw in the top of the casquette. Stuck a length of 4x2 between the forks and gave a good heave with the forks against the stop. Couldn't detect any "give", SSO bolted everything back up and replaced front wheel and went for a short ride. Absolutely no difference. In desperation I pulled up to the corner of the garage, placed the front wheel appropriately and gave a mighty swung on the bars, thumping the tyre against the masonry. Voila---as they say in the Renault factory. Not perfect, but a vast improvement. I'll give it a proper test ride in the week, and if necessary repeat the process with the pinch bolts and head clamp loosened. Thanks to all for your comments and advice.
