After curing it for a week I can't see it will be any different than the first time. Why would it be the big end? First stop would be to check the primary adjuster again. Is there a locknut fitted to it?

Hi all, the engine always had a slight background rattle from the engine that myself and the shop that does my Mot put down to piston slap. The rattle from the primary chain was cured, and is adjusted and the tensioner has a lock nut fitted. Will find out this morning when I lift the top end.

Well the top end is off, and the big end is shot. There is a fair amount of lift so I will get the engine out of the frame next week and see what else is worn. The barrel and piston show no signs of wear so the 535 kit can wait a while. That means the road trip up north is now officially cancelled

If its the big end then you will do well to fit Hitchcocks improved one below as its a known problem on this engine. See quote from Hitchcocks below.
Quote ((There have been a number of problems with the standard Electra (X) big end bearing failing. This is because the bearing runs directly in the conrod. We have taken a standard new conrod and machined it to accept an English made bearing which runs in a hardened sleeve pressed into the conrod.

Thats the con rod I'm going to fit along with a full set of European bearings, so hopefully that will be it reliable for a lot or year's

Davie, as a matter of interest how many miles has it done?

Hi Frank.... the recorded mileage is about 18200. I got the top end off yesterday and the barrel and piston is like new as is the rest of the parts I have removed. Its just a pity the con-rod isn't up to the same standard.
