I have a 1967 Military BSA B40. It has the original oil filter. I've been told that the filter element is the same as Royal Enfield. Has anybody out there any information regarding this. I believe Alan R has a B40GB.

Hi guys----------- FROSTY, what a person of discerning taste you are to be sure !!... ie}-- a fellow WD B40 owner...OK, to answer your question}--------- The only RE filter I have practical knowledge of is the felt-type fitted as OE to the Iron Engined Bullets ( 500 in my case )... but I don't know what's fitted to the UCE/EFI units........According to RUPERT RATIO's latest book }--- VOL 2 Everything but the engine, "--up to 1969 the VOKES gauze type filter was fitted...This could be washed and re-used if not damaged"..............."after 1969 the paper element was used..this was for the WD B40, B25, all 1970's Triumph twins and is readily available" ----------- As I have 2 WD bikes I'll try and see if I can get the Enfield felt one to "fit" in the 1965 one that I have..............Give me a few days and will come back to this-------------------------------- Image

Amazing the length people go to, to offer help. Many thanks Alan and Alan. Having owned a 1999 Indian Enfield and 1950 model G, I had my suspicions that the regular felt filter wouldn’t fit but the later paper element may do the job.
I do have Rupert Ratios first book but not the later “all but the engine” book. Lightening Spares keeps pushing me to buy it.
I competed in the Beamish Trophy Trial last year on a very unsuitable bike. After deliberation I decided the B40GB would be ideal, having reasonable on and off road capability plus good off road gearing. I’ve owned C15’s, B50’s and B25’s in the past and know the engine and general construction is pretty good.
There are a few minor jobs to sort out but generally the bike is pretty good.
Alan R, where in the country are you? And where would the rally be?
The B40 web site; I contacted Lee to ask if he knew of any bikes for sale. He put me onto someone and the rest is history.

Hello FROSTY-----------OK, here we are then-------- There were 2 types of filter fitted to the WD B40 ie}---- an "early" type made by VOKES which has a washable gauze element ( up to 1965 ), and the "later" type made by British Filters Ltd. which has a paper element ( 1965 to 1969 )............These two are NOT interchangeable !!.........However, the "early" Vokes and the Enfield Electra X elements are same diameter but differ slightly in length, the RE one being about 10mm longer...... Also the ELectra X type will need a thin mounting plate with a raised centre to act against the spring and seal the filter at the bottom ( otherwise the oil will just go straight through.. ( I'll phone our hosts tomorrow and see if that plate is available from stock)..............This will be a very useful conversion as the Vokes units are very scarce indeed..... Hi FROSTY---- I have spoken to Wayne at Hitchcocks and he has E-mailed me the dimensions of the filter support plate that fits under the filter element in the Electra X.......This has shown me that I need to make a brass adaptor bush in order that the Purolator filter will work in the BSA filter bowl------ My lathe is out of use at the moment so I'll need to call round at a mate's house to get it done.................. It's looking like we can come up with a conversion "kit" using stock items from out hosts PLUS this bush........I'm really glad you posted this as I currently have a 1964 bike with the filter removed so it's the ideal opportunity to make this happen.................Alternatively you can always fit a complete bowl unit from a later model ( With the paper filter in as standard...)...................... I'll post back on here in a weeks time......................
