Dennis I did as you suggested and gave it the heat treatment, spark just as good when hot. Checked my records -replacement armature fitted by Dave Lindsley(nice chap) in 2010 when I got the bike. Whether this included a new condenser or not I don't know but I'm sure he would have tested it before and after fitting. I was very impressed with his workmanship. I THINK I may have found the problem but until I've proved it I'm saying nothing! Will get back.

Hi Sam, If Dave did it it would have a new modern condensor which are far more reliable than the old ones. Please let us know the outcome, I was now trying to imply that the mag was the fault just advising on testing, I hope it was some help to you.

"I was now trying to imply that the mag was the fault just advising on testing". For now read not.

Please can we have an edit facility.

Tell me, is it still a bit brisk over there? I occurs to me that you might be icing up the carb. That stops a motor pretty dead and then goes again as soon as the bike is stopped and the endothermic process of vaporising fuel is stopped for a bit. Just a thought.

I think I have now found the cause of the problem-and Alan R wins the prize. I removed the fuel line plus filter, replaced by pipe-no filter. Given several road tests of differing lengths,no sign of the fault. Replaced fuel line plus filter, failed on first run. This time I carefully observed filter,it was only half full even though there was plenty of fuel in the tank. Depressing tickler on float chamber had no effect, stayed half full presumably air-locked. I suppose I should have waited to see if level eventually rose but opted to slacken off the floatchamber union whereupon filter filled up ,bike started end of problem. I examined the filter, which had been in use for several thousand miles, and can find nothing wrong with it. Same `blowing' resistance as an identical new one,no obstructions in pipe, filter paper not blocked up,fuel pipe used is modern type. So there you have it-perhaps the answer is to change the filter on a regular basis. My sincere thanks to all of you who responded.
