Lots of food for thought there,thanks for all your comments. I'm running an Amal 276 and I have fitted an inline fuel filter. I've got an old Evershed 500 volt megger,would this do the job?

Forget the Megger,I'll use a multmeter on ohms range as suggested.

HANG ON MATEY !!!------Try without the in-line fuel filter !!------------ I had exactly the same symptoms on my 2009 500 Bullet a few years ago and normal service was returned after removing the filter.... The odd thin was it had been running ok for the best part of the year before this problem showed itself...........I'd forgotten all about it until your last posting !!.....It's worth a try and should only take about half an hour to replace the filter with a straight length of clear fuel pipe........

If you are in the UK then why not simply get the magneto tested. If it then shows failure get it rebuilt. Tony Cooper will test it for you. I have just had mine rebuilt by Tony Cooper from Halesowen. Cost? The grand sum of £155. It is as cheap as a Thorspark conversion. When rebuilt it is retested, looks like new and comes with a 2 year transferable guarantee. However the "white plug" syndrome does suggest a weak mixture. However this is not as reliable a test as it used to be. Unleaded and ethanol contaminated fuel does not burn as well as leaded. The result is a much less reliable result when doing a plug chop unfortunately.

Now funnily enough my thoughts had been turning to the inline filter. thanks Alan R I'll give that a go. I'll also consider a mag rebuild. Resistance plug lead/mag body was 4.9 kohm by the way I'll try a test run and get back later. Thanks all.

Hi Samj, 4.9k is fine they were only built with a 10% tolerance when new, I am not saying you don't have a fuel problem the white plug suggests you may have, but it is unlikely that a temporary fuel shortage would take ten minutes to restart, it is far more likely that yout condensor is failing and after ten minutes it cooled enough to allow a restart, I would try heating the mag and see what happens, it could save you a long push home.

It's the condenser and or armature. Get the armature rewound and have a new condenser fitted. Dave Lindsley does a good job (I know, I worked for him for three years in the late 70's after leaving Lucas) Don't try and get just the condenser fitted, false economy. Do both, it's the heart of your bike, spend the money and enjoy riding home not arriving on the back of the AA truck.

Fully agree with Frosty, as I said earlier if it is the original coil get it rewound.
