Hi Davie,
Make sure you have a comprehensive breakdown cover. Just cost me €135 to get my bike back to the dealers! My insurance breakdown cover is for roadside assistance and recovery and I have just discovered that the recovery is only for the first 20 kms. That includes them coming out to get you so in actual fact it's virtually useless. I will be doing a similar trip across to the UK in June so if anyone knows of a good breakdown recovery service in France please let me know. Good luck. Mick.

Hi Mick

I know that you can extend RAC cover to Europe for a few days, e.g. for the duration of your trip. I extended my cover to European Recovery for about 40 GBP for 2 weeks the last time I travelled. It is a relatively expensive and uneconomical way to do it, but a full years' Euro cover was around 200 GBP.

I used it too! But only because I was totally exhausted afetr such a long trip and my rear brake seized up (due to muddy, sandy riding) and I couldn't be bothered stripping it myself. The mechanic was please to do a job which didn't require 'pluggin in' and I went to the pub instead :)
