Scalyback and Alan R. You would think theses Enfields are unreliable with remarks like that.

Just a heads up Davie, Bertie popped 2 rear spokes last time I went camping, he didn't like the extra weight of all that camping gear, if it were me I would carry 1 inner and 1 outer.

Hi Davie. How many miles has your bike done in total? My Electra X is in the shed. Gave up after trying to keep it going for 26000 miles or so. Might sell it this summer. If you ever need a hand with your bike, I probably have most of the engine tools and stuff. Been messing around with the Electra X for years, with help from the knowledgeable guys on this forum. I can't be very good though, otherwise I would still be riding it. I live in Consett, within reasonable distance of the Otterburn area, lovely part of the country, you lucky man. Have a good trip!

Hi Robin. My bike has just rolled over 18000 miles. Im the 3rd owner and the plan is for it to be my retirement bike , so I have 9 years to get it sorted. The plan for this year is a 535 kit and maybe the cams to match. Im lucky in that I have a Bmw r1100gs and a Bmw k1200lt, so the Enfield is a toy. Thanks for the offer of help and tools. Give me a shout and I will try and meet up with you.

Hi Davie, I have done a few long trips on my Enfield and the main tools I have ever really *needed* are clutch adjustment tools (a couple of 10mm spanners, or one and a leatherman) and tools to adjust the rear chain tension. Don't get me wrong, other tools have been used!!! But the comments about chain tension and rear sprocket teeth ARE TRUE! Fully laden up you might need to adjust that rear chain a little more than normal.

Enjoy the trip! Plus, take waterproofs!

Hello Davie, Did you know the Otterburn ranges are open for the next few weeks for the lambing season. Had a ride around on the Electra on Good Friday. Picked up a free map of the Otterburn range road system and found Controlled Access area guide is the best one as there are 3 guides published by the Defence Estates. Picked up mine at the Otterburn Mill tourist information room. Had a great day out on superb wide roads without potholes and fantastic views until you leave back onto public roads. Only saw 3 cars and a few cyclists while on the ranges. Stopped at Barrowburn café on my way home via Alwinton. Great day out and the sun shone all the time.
I would think about Shearings self drive as they have a hotel in Gairloch and my wife and I have used it 3 times. A twin bed room for two would keep the cost down. No tent ect to carry, DBB so no problem with meals. Do not forget your camera if you have one.

Davey, Just picked up your request for hand guards. Look up Commonly motorcycle rider hand guard protector set. Big size. (THEY ARE BIG) E-BAY number 390743268955. £16 + £10 shipping air mail from Hong Kong. Fitted onto my Electra X. You have to disconnect the clutch cable from the handle bar lever to route the cable through the plastic support arm but that is all. Kit contains all fitting parts. Front brake side no problem. These are really large and give maximum hand protection from wind and water. If you phone me with your e-mail address I will send you some photo's. Our host does not sell these but perhaps he should as they are the best I have seen for touring protection in all weathers and if too hot can be removed quickly leaving the fitting attached to the bike.
