If like me, you use Halfords Classic 20w-50 (mainly for the higher zinc content, compared to modern oils) I think Wilkinson are selling the same stuff for £4 less! A 5 litre steel can of "Wilkinsons" Classic 20w-50 to the same spec as the Halfords product (API SE CC) is £16, whereas it's £19.99 in Halfords. It's probably identical stuff! (Halfords, I believe, is made by Comma). I don't mean to start another tedious thread on the merits, or otherwise, of various oils ...... just saying!!

That's nothing. I've got 2 cans of the Halfords stuff. I did an oil change and the can was empty, so I bought another. I completely forgot that I had already bought a can for when the first ran dry. Sozpants!

Never mind the price - what's this about the quality? More zinc than other oils? Why is that better?

There's a tale, (true!) I have posted before about Halfords oil.

Back in early nineties I was running a Peugeot 309, petrol, and being short of cash at oil change time I bought a can of Halfords equivalent oil instead of usual Castrol.
On my journey to work next day, I got to the end of the Sheffield Parkway and the tappets were rattling away, settling down as I carried on into Rotherham.
The same thing again on way home at Sheffield end.
I dug deeper into my pocket and bought usual castrol oil and changed it. No more noise!
Since then I won't use Halfords oils in anything.
Seems their stuff is probably ok if you keep off motorway speeds and the like, but get's too thin as it get's hot.

Just my own experience,

Ray.

PS. I have bought a can of Silkolene 20/50 to do the oil change on my Sixty5.

Zinc is regarded as the last line of defence against metal-to-metal contact after the protective oil film breaks down in high-stress situations. Car oils don`t have as much zinc as special motorcycle oils for older models because it damages the catalytic converters. Penrite make special oils for Heritage, Vintage and Veteran motorcycles which contain more zinc, and others which contain no friiction modifiers so they can be used in the clutch housing.
