Thanks for the comments. Just to update you I have changed the spark plug today and hey presto - it starts straight away! It was a fairly new NGK in the bike which was why I thought it unlikely, but reading various threads it does seem that quite a few people have problems with NGK. It was an original, from our hosts, and not a copy. But it still failed very quickly (about 250 miles). Why would that happen? Anyway, I am now greatly relieved and happy to have the bike on the road again. Thanks.
