Here's a view of the other side------note the thin primary steel cover ( This is the AJS stablemate of the Matchless)--------------- Image

I have had a couple of these over the years. Great bikes, plenty of go, good breaks, good handling and sound wonderful with a gold star pattern silencer.

That's an oldie, a ridged with a the iron head and military style headlamp brackets. I had the 1952 version with painted rims from the nickel shortage. I never had a problem with the tin chain case. As long as I had the proper rubber seal (there are a number of second rate after market ones) I never leaked a drop.

I've been out to see it. There are some issues. Amongst those, the bike wouldn't start, but apparently the guy who is selling it knows a bloke who can get it going in seconds.. A big Amal carb is fitted. The rims are shot. The throttle assembly on the handlebar is loose, to the point of falling off.

He has the front mudguard, it's lying in the garage. There is a baggage rack lying beside it. The rear mudguard is a three piece assembly, the bottom piece at the tail end is missing. All the cables seem stiff. It leaks from the chain case. But, it all seems fixable. He does have a rather comprehensive history of the machine, including newspaper articles and photos, documents and invoices that go way back.

If we can get it running, then I might be in.

And just to complicate things, there's a German in Hamburg who is also interested in it... and I miscalculated the price; equates to £3,175.00

Why am i getting a sinking feeling about this…?

Forget Herman the german, probably tripe to make you panic..

Think you can find heavy weight singles for £3000 that are MOT'D and running…

The price is far too high bearing in mind the faults. These AMC singles are great bikes. I have a 1946 350 Matchless and love it, but I think you should leave this one alone.

Exile if you think viewing 'bikes
is misleading, try online dating a
while; pixs twennty years out of
date is just the beginning! Way back
in my Oz youth, AMC singles were as
common as house flies and just as cheap
Ten or twenty pounds AUS for both the
48 AJS or the 47 Matchless 350s..the
latter I lost a thumb to a drunken
farmer, but hardly home was scourging
junk yards for forks and tank to be
mobile again

Hi EXILE------------ go with your first, gut reactions and leave it alone.........It's NOT AS ADVERTISED (ie}--- "It runs ok" ) and the price is too high IMHO....... So what if there is ( or isn't) A.N.Other bidder, the deal is between you and the vendor.....The wheels are shot ?? OK, typical labour cost for a wheel re-build is about £40 per wheel, so that's £80 PLUS the cost of 36 x 2 spokes and nipples @ approx £2 per a pair = £144 + £80 = £224 PLUS paint & lining ( £x ??)...PLUS the cost of 2 rims = £100 approx.......So that's an estimated total of £244 just to have some decent wheels...Add on another £170 for the tubes and tyres and we have a grand total of £414 approximately.....and the engine still doesn't go at this stage...Then you'll be wanting a decent dual seat = £100 ish.......a full set of cables = £50,....Seal the fuel tank = £100,.......Then when you do eventually get it running and maybe the electrics are playing up ?? = £100 dynamo and regulator re-con...........These are approx. prices gained over the last few years helping my mate with his 1930's 350 Royal Enfield re-build............... YOUR MONEY, YOUR CHOICE !!..............Good luck.
