Thanks for the help and advice I will bear it all in mind when I get it home, I have got it added onto my classic bike policy so may even get it in for an MOT next week if all goes well. I have never had an Enfield before but have got a rigid frame 350cc AJS and have had BSA,Norton and Ariel 350cc singles so I have a rough idea what to expect. I am quite happy pottering down the back roads.

-------- it might be a bit more "rough" than you're used to...Those makes are all quality brands, even in the early days, compared to the Indian Enfields..... but at least you have the correct location in mind for these machines..Not like some who come on here then blart about their 15 year old bike throwing a rod ( or decapitating a piston )at 70mph down the local motorway !!

Hi Alan R ,
I know what rough is I have been riding a 1979 250cc twin CZ for a couple of years, thats the one where the gear change doubles up as the kickstart, thats how I got the name smokyjoe have you ever followed one?.

------- indeed yes as my mate at work had an MZ single with the kickstarter on the L/H side etc...I also ride with the NACC crowd and have done the Coast-to-Coast 3 times on Mobylettes and Puch Maxi N machines.....Stinkwheels to be sure !!

Hi All,
I got the bike home at the weekend and changed all oils as suggested ( the worm drive cork seal will come later ) it has cleaned up really nicely and is virtually rust free just a tiny bit on front rim. Problem was it would not start, I kicked away merrily 20 or 30 times nothing. I then remembered a Honda Transalp I used to have and kept my hand well away from the twist grip instant success ,it now starts 1st or 2nd kick every time, I have had a quick ride around the village to test clutch, brakes etc, I like it. Away on holiday next week then MOT and tax it and venture further afield.Probably a trip to Scarborough, just a nice 70 mile round trip. Cant wait.

MZ's do NOT smoke - oil does! Use Morris's synthetic oil at the correct ratio and you'll have no smoke but excellent lubrication. Don't knock 2-strokes! It isn't fair! ;)

Hi ,
I always use Silkolene semi synthetic at 30-1 in my Francis-Barnett and 40-1 in the CZ, I wouldnt dream of knocking two strokes I love them.
I live just outside Beverley in East Yorkshire, consider myself lucky some great country roads and mainly traffic free if you avoid the main holiday routes.
