Badger, was just thinking if your motor has the three drain plugs in the casing, then the middle one which is the pickup for the pump and has a gauze filter on it will also drain the oil tank.
Albet not quite as fast obviously… My point being if its not yet convenient to fit helicoil then use a dowty seal on the drain and maybe a little ptfe on the thread to bulk it up a bit…
It doesn't need to be very tight to seal,as long as it is secure enough to see you through till winter maintenance/layup… Could stay like that permanent if it seals ok, just use the middle plug...

Hi all.

Thanks very much for all your suggestions, I will probably go with the helicoil job and try a piece of greasy rag up inside the hole and just be as careful as possible. many thanks again.

I always replace this with a double plug, one that is screwed in permanently, usually brass and a smaller one that is screwed into that, no more problems.
