Problem solved (and lessons learned);
Firstly thanks to everyone for the helpful advice. Yes, the main jet gasket had dropped out; I replaced this (along with every other gasket in the spares set from our hosts) but no improvement. Yes, the float height was a couple of mm from where it should be; corrected but no improvement. Couldn't see anything else that I'd missed so decided to buy a new carb advertised on Ebay from India. Described as a VM28 with a photo of a micarb; at only £22 plus £15p&p it seemed too good to be true. It was. Turned out to be a cheap Paco substitute which didn't work. The company is still advertising on Ebay so watch out if you're tempted. Dismantled the carb for the eigth time and had a Eureka moment, noticing something I had looked at several times but not realised its significance. The needle jet was sticking up into the carb body by a couple of mm. When screwing the main jet back in to the needle jet I must have pushed the needle jet up past the spiggot and turned it. This then tightened up without the spiggot locating into the slot. When corrected the bike fired up on first kick with no smoke. Back on the road, just in time for the good weather!
