I agree with Phil here,Helicoil simple to fit stronger than original thread, why complicate a simple job?.

Just to add, take a careful look at the youtube clip posted above, the bolt after the "repair" is not square to the plate then at the end pause the clip and check just how much thread is not there. what a very poor job I certainly wouldn't trust it to hold a bolt.

Dennis, There are better videos of this, this is the first one I came across.
I have used this method many times at work and at home and the results are excellent. It works, have you ever tied it???

No Johnny I have not tried it, and I am sure that you have used it with success, dont feel I was taking a pop at you personally because this was not intended and I am sure it has it's place, but on a crankcase stud mounting the hole and thread need to be precisely placed and square, the engine would need to be stripped to stand any chance of carrying out a repair by this method without dropping lots of junk inside the engine.
Incidentally have you noticed that the youtube clip was uploaded by Durafix who make the product?, what hope has an ametuer who has never used it before if this is the best the makers can manage?.

I'm sure Durafix will work well on some jobs but in this situation I feel it would be struggling.
I understand that the alloy must be very clean for Durafix to stick. I would suggest that trying to clean inside a stud hole which will be contaminated with oil would be tricky. Even if you drilled it out a bit oversize to clean it, you could well have oil coming out of the alloy when you heated it up. These castings are not the best in the world and can be porous.
Just my opinion but I think a mechanical solution would be safer.
