Put it all back together. One thing I have noticed is when the centre nut on the clutch/sprocket is torqued up, there is a lot of play. You can move the clutch sprocket bak and forth by about 5mm! Surely this is't normal? there was no spacer behind it. Can't see anything in the manual or parts book. Anyone got any ideas?

Put it all back together. I'm sure I've read somewhere that the clutch centres are fairly soft and may distort when (over)tightened on the gaerbox mainshaft splines.

As soon as I put the thrust plate on and tightened the springs, the play disappeared Took the timing cover off, just to make sure. All looks healthy. Vibration is still there. It's so bad that the nuts and bolts holding the exhaust tail on, unwound themselves and fell off!!!

Pony, there is a spacer available, it isn't listed in most of the Parts Books but you can see it in the 1969 750 Interceptor book. The number listed is VR73/6 but there are several thicknesses available, I'd ask our Hosts.

Pony there is a frightening amount of movement on the sprocket drum assy..

The hub is torqued to the shaft and should be firm without any movement..

The sprocket drum is retained on the hub only by a large circlip (spring retainer) and there is a lot of movement until such time as the plates and pressure springs are added and fully torqued, This tightens things up.. there all like that sir.. I'm just getting worried now about the fly wheel alignment or main bearings, hope it was only the sprag that got busted…

Still no untoward movement on the timing side, and the rotor still nicely concentric in rotation maybe just the timing advance not working.. Cheerful bugger when i'm pissed, sorry..

Thanks Mark. Thing is if it didn't have a spacer before, it's probably not the cause of the problem

A lot of clutches are off centre, just Indian engineering. Red herring I think but worth correcting if you can.

Gwilly, you could have a point about the crank but I'm not sure because the vibration wasn't there before and I don't think the sprag removal was because of a cranl lockup and jambed I have seen the end of the drive shaft bent from a sprag failure but I don't think this is the case here but anything is possible. Easy enough to check with a dial indicator and the rotor removed

Everything on the timing case appears good. No sign of wear or damage and all cogs rotating freely. Don't have a dial indicator but lay on the floor at eye level with the drive shaft and at idle, there's no visible sign of it being off centre as it spins. Will stick it all back together in the morning refill with new oil and then go to work checking out the timing advance. Although the clutch basket is slightly off centre of the sprocket, I think this is a red herring. I'm sure it probably adds some vibration at hight revs but I'm sure this isn't the cause. Tomorrows a new day and I'm sure I'll find it!
