Later this year, there will be a need to enter your driving licence number when purchasing insurance (In the UK). This is to ensure that the policyholder has the correct catagory on their licence and that they are not telling lies about any endorcements. They say it will make insurance cheaper for the honest, well, I will let you decide on that one yourself.

I renewed my insurance a couple of weeks ago and had to email a copy of my driving licence.

Personally I think this is a good thing, don't forget that your insurance is only granted on the condition that you have the appropriate licence and if you do tell lies to get insurance it will be void in the event of a claim.

Why can’t the insurance companies do the check?

After all, if I go to get insurance for either bike, they know who I am from my address which corresponds with the registration document, and this comes from the DVLA, so why the hell can’t the DVLA then just add entitlement classes to the info it sends back to the insurance company, or have I got something wrong here?

It just seems once again, it’s up to me to pay for a photocopy, or use incredibly expensive printer ink to send a copy of something that came from the same administration that the registration document for the vehicle I’m trying to insure, came from!!

It could be something to do with that “Registered keeper is not necessarily the owner” thing.!

Dunno how old or young you are Scaly but it is only in relatively recent years that a driving licenece did NOT have to be shown before insurance was granted. As for your objection to being asked for proof of entitlement and the cost of providing same then perhaps you should take your business elsewhere. ..... This may or may not be of interest in relation to the original post http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-25663249

I meant that if everything is electronic now, allowing tax discs to be scrapped, then can't they do the same thing for an entitlement check?

I only usually drive in France unless a hire vehicle int he UK, Until I bought Tornado in the summer that is.

I guess I never showed my license as I use to use the same broker, and he would always renew it over the telephone! (Guess I must have shown him the first time, but was long ago)

You don't want to see the crap they get up to over here, If you just even visit France on your bike and don't have approved reflective non removable stickers on your helmet, then you could be fined €130 euros.

Compulsory French Stickers

SO I didn't mean to stir the pot, just getting old and crabby I guess! LOL

Look at it this way. Lets say young Mr. Chav aged 18 already has 6 points for speeding in his Vauxhall Nova. If he doesn't declare his points his insurance could be £1000 cheaper. So he lies and gets insured so when Mr. policeman checks all is legal. OK, if he had a claim he might have problems, but then he won't be worried anyway. When things change across all companies, they only want the driver number off the licence, not photocopies etc. It will be OK as long as the computer systems are working correctly.

That's very true Midge and I forgot to add,

Of course I am in favour of this check. I would not want to be a pedestrian or other third party that got injured, only to find that the guilty party lied about no points or entitlement, thus making their insurance void, and possibly ending up with the innocent victim being very out of pocket.

Any system to help prevent that is a good idea, I just hoped they would do it automatically, but I know my name and how to scramble my date of birth so all I need to remember is "8JM" on the end, and I got it !! YAY !
