I have just bought a Lightning that I will convert back to a Bullet, but it is quite rusty, rims, any chrome etc, paint is trashed motor needs a rebuild so I think the easiest way to fix the chrome is to turn it into a military style and paint it in the military green. As part of this I will paint the engine cases and gearbox and I was wondering if there is any special preparation required for painting alloy with 2 pak enamel

norm , check out "self etching" primer ,also , all your chrome bits, take them to the chromers , for pennies they will de-chrome them. all stuff to be chromed goes thru this first

Alan R, from your link; "however if you are painting bare galvanised steel, aluminium or plastic you will need to prime first with either an Etch Primer or a Plastic Prime"

Which is same advice as Alan (Lancs)

I have found U-Pol Acid Etch #8 to be just the job for etch priming of alloy prior to painting. Available from Halfords here, or much cheaper from motor factors, but no idea as to availability in Austrailia.

Painting alloy without using a self etch primer is a recipe for disaster, the paint will peel in a very short time.

Hi guys--------- Hello PICT, Ooopss, Hoisted by my own petard ! ( well, almost like it) I'm not painting my "Army" Bullet engine as my research has shown that not many---if any at all----WD engines were actually painted.. In my haste to get this paint supplier info to NORM I'd missed that part where he says he wants to paint the engine as well..........Certainly my genuine Ex-WD B40's engine isn't painted..nor are others of its kind that I see on the roads......... https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=bsa+W ... ch&sa=X&ei --------------------------------------------------------- https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=match ... s&tbm=isch& ------------------------------------------------------------------------- https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=norto ... bm=isch&sa --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- But it would seem that the Indian Army itself DOES paint the engine, transmission and forks as well !!( iI thought it was a "Factory" idea..)------------ YOU LIVE AND LEARN, EH ?? The indian military bullets are indeed mostly painted, but that picture you found...

What a Puke up green!, much prefer the one in the background.

oh, P.S. the Indian colour standard is based (Pretty exactly) on BS 381 C , which is the UK military and civil service standard paint range.
