Tom,
can you email me at [email protected], I have a few other questions for you.
Is your bike a 6 volt system? I think I may have a 1960 model as I do have the kidney shaped tool box with the ignition switch attached. please respond to the e-mail request and i will send pics

On USA ebay there is a Chief for sale, item #201011626433 that the owner is selling as a 1960. The engine number would indicate it is a 1959 model. But germane to my previous post, the owner has the 1960 large battery box installed and also has the 1959 Enfield tool box/battery box included. An easy way for those not familiar with these somewhat unusual machines to see the difference side by side. Our hosts sell a reprint of the parts manual for the Chief unfortunately sans pictures. It does however have the correct Lucas numbers and the transmission gears with teeth numbers. Ted, I think I see a post from you on the Royal Enfield US Community Forum. If you page back on that site you can see my old beast under Tom 60 Chief, lots of others posted also. I have owned and ridden mine extensively since 1978.

Hi Ted,
I agree with Tom, I think your engine number would be 50328 (not 60328), this would fall in line, or near with the frame number and be a mid to late 1960 Chief. Avon offer a 5.00 x 16 SM tyre and this will fit in the swinging arm with no problems.

Paul, the Chief yokes were a lot wider than the standard yokes. As far as I know this was the only different width of yoke that Redditch Enfields made. There were some sidecar yokes made in the early 50's but these used the standard width but a bigger lead. My best guess it is not Enfield (unless India produced something different) or that it has bent. I have a yoke here which bent after hitting a rather deep pot hole. The one side bent back and the centers are now a few mm wider than the top yoke (and a very bent main tube and rim)

Hello,Ted
It's grate to se the interest developing in the RE- indian bikes after all this time, they are worthy of a lot more. My 59 chief is the only road registered bike in the whole of Australia that we know of,it has the single saddle fitted and as yet I haven't come across a seat pan for sale, may be some time down the track one of you guys in the USA might be willing to do a fibreglass take off for me at a reasonable price. But first I offer my knowledge to try and help you along with your project, if need be you can use 16harley rims, I run 5inch by 16 Avon white wall gangster tyres on my bike, I had to stretch the front guard or fender open by a simple hands and feet quick pull just to get that extra bit of clearance , and deflate the rear wheel 75percent to slip it in the rear swing arm and also cut a wee bit out of the chain guard to clear the tyre. Before you spend any cash on wrong parts for your bike like we all have, I would like to tell you and Allan at Hitchcocks will confirm this, the book you need to be order and be working off for correct part numbers is the 1955-1958 Indian trailblazer parts list plus the 1959&1960 royal enfield chief parts list supplement and you won't go wrong, Pierce motor centre in San Gabriel blvd San Gabriel ca, used this book back in the 50s.my bike was the original 6 vault, but I have up graded it with a 12 vault alternator it's quite simple to do. I recon the boys are correct on your eng number as well as the last chief was 50500 that we know off, mid 1959 they changed from smpb tp PC it's belived that this stood for police chief as there is an order form in 1959 from the NY police department for the first batch of 20 bikes, but after yrs of searching there is no actual evidence of the bikes being delivered. There must be an old photo or film clip of a cop on an re chief out there I recon, any way hope this might help you out Ted, you will love the chief when its up and running but take your time and enjoy it.

Regards, bluey.

Chevy,
I hope these will fit since there on order.Shinko E240 Classic MT90-16 Wide Whitewall Front/R. I hope i dont have to make alterations for them to be fitted. I have stripped the wheels down and are waiting on the new rims, tires, tubes, and wheel bearings. I will have to still order a lot of stuff since I am going to tear down the engine and see what it needs. Is there any common problem parts in the engine? I may do the rod bearings, crank bearings etc.. but won't know until I separate the case. Any items that I should pay attention too or things I should automatically change?
