The most important thing about supporting the slider when levering the seals out is to know they CAN crack. They look strong enough to take a bit of levering but apparently not.
If you dunk the whole lot in boiling water first it softens the rubber covering of the seals so they slide out easier. If you use a twisting action with the blade of your screwdriver rather than using it as a lever, you will put less strain on the slider end. If you're really nervous, find a bit of plastic plumbing pipe near the diameter of the slider, then split it and trim to size. You can then clamp that round the leg with Jubilees. If you have a lathe you could knock up a tool in no time of course.
Most special tools are designed for folk who are doing a particular job regularly and there are only a very few which are essential.
Having said that, if you're happier getting the proper tool then go for it.

Thanks Gents, the new foot pedal spindle has just arrived from our host (usual fantastic service thanks Hitchcocks) so will be removing the front legs from the Nacelle as soon as I can, will then see if the seals need changing, if so I will definitely be using the tool as the metal the legs are made of is forged from cheese. i am also going to take the opportunity to do away with the metal stanchion covers and leave them open to the elements, this way they get regularly oiled

Up to you of course but I wouldn't leave them open. Seals would wear even faster with road crap contamination. Why not fit gaitors? You could easily pull them back to inspect and, if you want, oil the seals. If you do fit gaiters, get the bigger ones and just cut the shrouds back and they fit very well.

That's it Alan. You need item 146167 to fit over the shrouds.
I didn't cut them quite that long, I left 1" below the bottom yolk.
You can saw them off in situ to save having to dismantle the yolks.

Or, if you really want exposed stanchions, at least fit the dust covers 170121
