hi all i have fitted a 80 mph smiths copy indian speedo to the dnepr the origional speedo was only registering 25mph under optimistic so fitted a smiths copy the bike is geared for 55mph and at the top end on the flat the smiths read 55mph so maybe the drive for the speedo from the gearbox is more reliable than the hub driven enfield speedo gearbox ?although i have one of these 80mph smiths copies on the diesel which i found to be excellent until the clock turned 2000mile then the brown stuff hit the fan it now works like all the worn chrono clocks ive owned just a thought there for all you budding dnepr fans happy days paul

I just received one of those from India for Tornado.



It looks very cheap and cost about 8 quid before P+P,

but my exsisting 120 MPH chrono reads well faster than the bike could ever do,

so I am tempted to fit the 80 MPH, weather permitting, and see how it measures up!

hi simon i bought 2 80mph clocks about 2 years ago for £15 i think the quality is the same as they are all made in a shed in india somewhere ,another thought how does mr h manage to sell speedo,s that dont come up to scratch in his special offers?occasionally who,d want a known lemmon? atb paul

If the Indian made one is a direct copy of the Smiths then there is an adjusting screw accessible through the bulb mounting hole.

I don't know about the rest of the movement, but they didn't copy the adjusting screw, unfortunately.

No adjusting screw Dennis not copied that good yes John b ,s speedo is accurate at 55 to60 mph happy days

The original Smiths Chronos are a work of art. Taken from the original Jaeger pattern or possibly one before it they are a clockwork escape movement that is when calibrated properly phenomenally accurate. The Indian copies are only similar in size and the design of the face. They are a magnetic movement which involves a magnet spinning in a steel cup attached to the needle and restrained by a spring. They are at best accurate at one point but are generally good enough for the task. The reason for the change over to magnetic speedos though was purely one of cost the chronometrics being a n extremely complicated and precise device. If you have one keep it and look after it as they are precious.

Since we're talking speedos,
recently bought a couple of
the chintzy Indian ones from
our hosts solely for my low
budget boppers I have to get
through the city test here.
Although Mr H's catalogue
listings of speedo cables on
page 192 are quite clear,
would just like to confirm
whether the speedo cearbox
coupling thresd is the same
on the British 'Enfield,BSA
etc. as on the usual Indian
Enfields. The coupling thread
on the Indian actual speedo
is somewhat larger than a
defunct Smiths Chrono once
fitted on one of the 'bikes
I have here. Mr H offers
several lengths cables which
