Just seen a Puch Maxi Moped (remember those?) towing a little trailer! All looked nice and legal with two rear lights and a number plate light. But it got me thinking what the law is these days on such matters. Back in the days of yore if you'd passed your test you could tow a bike with a bike or a trailer with a bike but now sure about now. Any ideas? Cheers all. Tony.

Legally for a solo motorcycle to tow it must have an engine capacity over 125cc.
â—¾The trailer must not exceed 1 metre in width.
â—¾The distance from the rear wheel spindle to the back of the trailer must not exceed 2.5 metres.
◾The Motorcycle must be marked with it’s kerbside weight.
â—¾The trailer must be marked with its unladen weight.
◾Maximum towed weight, including the trailer and it’s load must not exceed 150 Kg. (330 lb.) or two thirds of the motorcycles kerbside weight, whichever is least.
â—¾The UK speed limit is 60 mph on dual carriageways and motorways.
â—¾Lighting regulations are the same as other small trailers.
â—¾You cannot tow more than one trailer and passengers are not allowed to be carried inside the trailer.

Many thanks for that Pete. so I guess the guy on the moped was breaking the law, but I don't suppose anybody would be particularly bothered. Just looked such a strange sight on today's roads! Pity the little 49cc engine pulling that lot!

Joyce and I did an NACC "Coast-to-Coast" on a 49cc Mobylette one year then I and a fellow club member did it again the following year on a Puch Maxi N apiece ( N = no rear springs !!)

Out here glimpsed some moron
in the traffic a couple of times
with a unlicenced bicycle with
motor attachment spewing two
stroke smoke onto a trailer w/
an asphyxiated dog in a cage
like a circus lion's. Maybe the
RSPCA got the owner and pegged
him down on a ant's nest.
