buried deep in a pdf file on the DVLAs site

1. No requirement to renew a Statutory Off Road
Notification (SORN) on an annual basis
Subject to law change, from 16 December 2013 DVLA will remove
the requirement for customers to renew a SORN on an annual basis.
This means that a SORN will remain in force until a vehicle is either
taxed, sold or scrapped. Once a vehicle keeper has notified DVLA
that their vehicle is SORN’d, they will no longer have the burden of
annual SORN renewals.

might just help a few on here with long projects

Careful, it says "subject to law change" which hasn't happened yet I think! I wonder why a law change is needed at all as I think it was brought in by a Government instrument which doesn't require primary legislation in the first place? REgards, Mark

Currently when a SORN is due, the DLVA send you a form to re-tax or re-sorn. If you get one of these do not ignore it. When the new arrangements are in place it will be made clear. Some sensible changes are being made, but it still needs an eye on things to make sure you remain legal. I'm sure places like Sammy Millers will be pleased when the new SORN measures are in place.

Hi I have a 1960 triumph that was in bits for 20 years and is now almost on the road,
I contacted the DVLA to see if it needed to be sorned, and they replied saying that I didnt need to until I registered it again ie tax ( exempt ) and MOT.Is this correct?

SA, yes. If the bike was off the road before the legislation started (even if it was in bits,) then it won't have been taxed and therefore won't have entered the SORN process when the tax disc expired.

I've had a SORN declaration returned as the bike was registered before ("x" date) and didn't need to be SORN'D at all !!
