This is a great debate why should it be just the minority classic vehicles that get free tax and no mot I think it all smells its high time mag or the bmf challenged the powers that be how can a car (four wheels) be cheaper to tax than any bike? Of any cc it just stinks I think the mot should be re installed on classic vehicles also as some people run these daily and some are not fit to be on the highway !its over to you!!!!!atb paul

Here in the jolly kingdom of Denmark, the most taxed country in Europe, we have to pay road tax by the weight of the vehicle one drives and an eco tax on the amount of fuel that vehicle uses (According to tests on a similar model of vehicle.) Even if it is "vintage". It's all arbitrary anyway, because over here, the government foxes (the tax collectors) are looking after the government chickens (us!).

Fuel is taxed separately and to the hilt....

Road tax is unfair because it is basically a tax on ownership rather than on usage. and so in no way reflects the actual pollution that a vehicle is producing. An ancient gas guzzler used infrequently by a retired couple for occasional trips shopping, for example, will be taxed higher than a modern car owned by a rep who is covering a vast annual mileage, even though in reality the gas guzzler probably produces less annual pollution.
I would not trust this, or any, government to run the system as anything other than a 'fleece the motorist' scheme, but abolition of the road tax and replacing it by a fuel tax is theoretically the fairest method.
