I have to ponder the vibration question. Do Enfields vibrate that badly? Yeah OK, the first one I ever rode (an early 500) vibrated so badly, that it almost shook out my fillings. On the other hand, my Lightning is really smooth. Even cruising at 60mph, the reflection in the mirrors is perfectly clear. How bad is 'bad vibration'? My indicators are the Home Market rubber mounted ones (Hell, the whole bike is Home Market). So what are we blaming here? Poor quality of the components or the vibration of the engine? From where I'm sat, the first Enfield I rode had a badly balanced crank. The only quality issues I've had since then is the poor quality of the Indian chrome. Enfields: A bit of a Lottery.

Has anyone ever tried rubber mounting as of the norton commando system. This system worked well on commandos insulated the rider from most of the vibes when set up correctly unfortunately the rest of the bike slowly destroyed itself around the rider i know cos i had a fastback in the eighties, loved that bike to pieces but sold it when first little one came along, sob.

It's really a trait of a big single. Yes, you can balance the crank, ensure the engine mounts and head-steady are tight etc, but it will never be silky smooth like an in-line four. The Commando had Isolastic engine mounts but that wouldn't work on the Enfield as the engine is a stressed component of the frame. Remove the engine and see how te single frame tube flexes about. When stuff breaks off, break open Mr H's catalogue!

If we accept standard things will wobble and become loose/break off, what modifications have we done to help the situation? Has anyone fitted a type of mirror that doesn't need adjusting every few miles, moved indicators to a different position successfully, replaced the rear light for one that doesn't shake, rattle and roll etc ? The only thing I have sucessfully done is use Mr H's front mudguard stays after the old ones turned to jelly.
