I am restoring a 1949 J2. The brake operating cam housing('cam bush') is fitted rigidly with the larger end in and 2x 5/8" bolts and nuts. From 1955 the successor model the Bullet seems to have the same housing fitted small end in and is allowed to float with 3/4" bolts and spring washers. The workshop manual extols the virtues of the floating housing for better braking performance and more even shoe wear. So is there any good reason why i should not fit the part on my dear 1949 model in this way?

Someone has bodged yours, it will be better as the makers intended! Don't expect miracles though! REgards, Mark

Thanks Mark. Im still not clear though. Can i safely fit the housing floating? Sorry to be dull.

The idea is to fit the whole assembly with the bolts and nuts loose, apply the brake hard so the shoes centralise and tighten the bolts. Three hands required! You must have the correct half nuts, shouldered screws and double spring washers, all available from our Hosts. REgards, Mark
