I am considering converting my 500 bullet 1993 to cdi ignition using the Electra flywheel magneto and cdi box.It looks like I will have to change the drive shaft on the crank on the drive side to the Electra type part no 145430/B.

I will either use the Electra cdi or an aftermarket cdi with ignition advance programmable control(such as Zeeltronic).

Has any one done this?

Looks like I will have to replace the clutch cover as well unless I can use a spacer ring.

I would appreciate any feedback.

I have seen similar done several times around the world , at one stage rex caunt was working on a trigger unit for me that replaced the altenator magnets , electrex are already offering a kit that replaces the altenator , (made for bsa/triumphs) however the last time I looked they had not managed to incorporate a charging coil, both mentioned use the PVL system

hi ajb ,i think that you may be setting yourself a large task never mind having to change the drive shaft the wiring will need a coat of looking at and also if you were to change the primary cases to electra type you,ll have gear selector shaft holes to block as the electra is lefthand change obviously none of this is impossible as these are mere machines but it does seem an awfull lot of work for very little gain in my honest opinion please let us know how you fare with this project atb paul.

however if you dig deeply into the indian home market bikes , pre electra did indeed have CDI ign fitted

Yes, the first Electra models for the Indian home market was CDI ignition, later changed to TCI. I managed to download a parts manual for the Electra and that's where I got the drive shaft part no from. They list the complete flywheel magneto as well. I didn't check the chaincases though, the job gets bigger the more I look. The trigger coil option from Rex Caunt or similar idea would be a much more viable option.

I would like to know what you think you will gain from this conversion. I have been looking at this option and have got the parts for the home market Electra along with the CDI black box but at this stage I haven't worked out how to wire it.Trust me I'm not that interested but the bloke wants to mount a supercharger where the existing distributor is. Changing the primary cases and re drilling the crankcase to take the new inner primary are the least of the problems. Alternator is 3 phase as well so rec/reg and wiring needs to be altered

norm 3 phase reg/rec units are the norm (sorry) on most jap bikes and are cheap , 3 wires in , 2 wires out , like the supercharger idea tho ,,,,

For me the advantages of a crank mounted CDI ignition would be:
a. high energy spark under all running conditions.
b. fully adjustable,accurate and repeatable advance curve and timing using a plug in programmable controller or laptop.
c. set and forget,no points wear, no dodgy mechanical advance,no bushes to wear, no backlash on the gears.

I have a Yamaha RD350 YPVS and have added a programmable CDI. On a 2 stroke the ignition timing and advance curve is critical, and I have had excellent results with the Zeeltronic system.

If the Electra conversion is not practical I will probably use a crank mounted CDI and mount a small alternator or dynamo where the distributor used to be. However the supercharger option is interesting...
