Lots of interesting info here, thanks everyone. The last bush fire I encountered was years ago when the wife dropped a cigatette in her lap. I think I will go for the 19T set up, but not the close ratio gears yet as I don't personally find the 4 to 3 gap a great problem, I don't want to reduce the kick-start momentum and of course the cost. Never say never, but not for now.

One strange thing I noticed Midge was that when I was running on the standard 17T sprocket the best cruising speed was 50mph. Then when I fitted an 18T sprocket the best cruising speed was....50mph. And now, running with a 19T sprocket the best cruising speed has jumped to 50 mph! Work that one out!!!

---------- but you're now doing that on a lesser throttle opening because better use is being made of the engines' TORQUE to get the same power rather than RPM..........

Both those last two posts make a lot of sense to me, I'm not looking for more speed, just a lower revving engine that will still go up long fast hills without bogging down.
