From my limited electrical knowledge, the battery acts as a capacitor, smoothing the voltage, the regulator cannot by itself supply a constant voltage within a fine tolerance. The alternator output varies considerably with rotational speed and electrical load. Glad you solved the problem.

Interested to read this thread given my current (no pun intended) electrical problems. I have a gel-type battery, I wonder how much this has contributed to my problems (Michael's EFI Update thread), if at all? I thought gel-type batteries were supposed to be a bit easier, and longer lasting?

Hi Michael, possible but not that likely I wouldn't have thought. To burn wires you need a short somewhere, over voltage wouldn't cause them to burn

Hi all... does this things with gel batteries also include the AGM type battery? The reason for asking is that I sort of got intrigued by all the promises for a maintenance free battery and samller too... all the best Jacob

Hi Jacob, so far the AGM batteries are a much better quality battery and I fitted a very small one inside the seat of a cafe racer and it is working fine even though it has a 22 tooth gearbox sprocket and is ridden about 8ks each way to work daily and there is a lot of traffic lights in that 8ks so low revs and stop start between them. So far so good. I can't remember the battery number but it was about 80 mm square and about 50mm thick and it is fitted laying on its side
