Hi Jacob,
You can connect the alt wires up and test them but don't run it into the existing rec/reg because I'm fairly sure it would end up in a puff of smoke. I can only give you info on what I know works

Norm... by existing do you mean the stock reg/rec? I have ordered an A Reg One reg/rec which is good for 200 Watts. My intention was to install it and then try which combination of violet, yellow and orange to go for. I hope you don't mean I can risk burning the new installed reg/rec during my try outs. Because if you do I'm not aware of how to start and run the bike for a test operation without the alternator connected to a reg/rec unit. I only have a 5 Ah battery on my kick start only bike and it will be out of power in no time without charging... all the best Jacob

No worries, the Reg One will stand anything the alternator can produce. He original equipment would possible struggle though.
