Any one know if or what will remove the (standard issue) grey plastic looking stuf on a sixty five outer gear box? to match the polished look of the timing chest?

Ant suggestion that will do the job when combined with the old elbow greese.

If it's the 5-speeder, it's finished in some sort of paint. So you either use paint stripper (which can be a problem if caustic because it can dissolve aluminium alloy) or abrade it in some way, then polish. It would be better to remove the cover, of course, rather than leave it in situ. This also opens up the option of bead blasting or vapour blasting to remove the paint. Just a thought, though, why did the factory paint the gearbox end cover when the engine timing case is polished? Could the gearbox cover be a lousy casting with a load of filler in it? Surely not..............???

Take it off and try Nitromoors. This used to remove the awful laquer stuff that the Japs coated their engines with. Wash off with plenty of clean water then get out the solvol and elbow grease.

They painted the gearbox cover on some for the same reason they painted the fork legs on the Electra. Sorry I don't know why they painted then, it was just another dumb Indian thing probably somebody said it loos veddy,veddy good

Some covers were polished, the original on my box was. The replacement cover with a modified clutch cable entry came painted complete with embedded finger prints. I polished them out but have never been happy with the finish.
