Ah what about a tube thats longish but has just a few 2mm holes around the uppermost part..

place your finger in the tank and touch a side at the bottom ,this is flush , cut a piece of plastic pipe etc and squeeze it in so that a bit is protrusing into the tank , but not touching the fuel

Alan, Gilly, good idea, perhaps a small hole in the side of the "toilet roll" would allow the whole tank to breath whilst stopping the sloshing about. not being an engineer but always willing to have a go some help with what to make it out of and how to produce a lip around the top would be a great help

yes in the case of the bullet , the top would have to be flattened to go under the cap , just an idea? , I sold my bullet so hav,nt access to test.

it only needs 1/4 inch or so to work ,

look at trials bikes etc then you can visualise this

But we would still be left with the problem of sealing the lip of the tube to the tank... same problem as the cap is at present

Trouble is alan its not just the sloshing fuel if the bikes parked on a hot day with a tank full i've had the vapour condense and dribble down the tank..
Really is a poor job engineering wise to have petrol running back over the tank between your legs..

I've had a few old bikes, only the enfield has this problem..

Of my two Enfields the Sixty 5 had a flip cap which never leaked a drop and the Electra XS's flip cap leaked when full. Completely cured it by cutting a large 'washer' from thick leather (don't ask!).
It just makes me laugh out loud when people on here say that RE can't design a tank that doesn't leak - the Indians didn't design it - it's a good old Redditch design, and they don't all leak AND they can be cured!
Can't wait to order my new Conti GT in the new year...

Stu,
Redditch tanks didn't have locks and the cap is completely different than the Indian ones. Redditch caps pulled down against external lugs the Indian ones pull down internally and that is where they leak. I hope you Conit tank doesn't leak because obviously you have been lucky because thousands of them have.
