I have never struck this before but I have a 4 wire stator that is overcharging on the D/C side. A/C headight seems fine. D/C side is flicking up to 19 volts D/C and I have tried 2 rec/reg units with the same results. This 4 wire stator I don't think had been used before as it didn't appear to have any oil on it and appeared new. The owner has never had the bike running since he has owned it and I have just got it running and thought I would check the charge rate. Any thoughts?

30 views and nobody ever struck this before. I have always found Enfields struggle to provide enough power but this one is rediculous. I ran a jumper lead from the battery to the engine incase it was an earthing problem but I then saw 19 volts D/C flick up before I shut it off

Hi Norm. I assume that both the reg/rec units you tried are known to be good. It does seem rather more likely to me that you may have a duff reg/rec than a stator with super-powerful coils. Or maybe I haven't got a full understanding of what the reg/rec does!

Can you swop the feed from the coils to the ac reg over to the dc rect to prove the stator? Is the battery ok and not putting too much load on the rect? Must say when I had similar high peaks it was the reg rect at fault. Maybe a too high input has blown them both? Whats the ac voltage in?

Hi Allan,
I pulled the rec/reg units off 2 bikes that were charging fine as far as I know the last time they were used even though that was a couple of years ago. I could refit them to one of the bikes and run it to check but the other one I have just fitted a Boyer to it but I have no doubt they were working ok.Has me a little stumped at the moment. Must admit I did have to file 3 of the coil post mounts on the stator to get it to clear the rotor but I have had to do this before without any problems

ahh you have got the 24v army issue alternator ! (joking) seriously it does sound like a couple of duff reg/recs , why not stick a set of known coils on?

Bike has gone so nothing I can check for the moment, he brought over 2 bikes with both gearboxes in boxes so you can imagine what that was like, I just wanted to get them back together and get them running, the charging issue was something I hadn't expected. I have since had a thought, it had one of those gel type batteries and I have had them do strange things before. I might hook it up with a Motorbatt battery and see if that changes things

Norm , having recently done some research (see thread about fitting a reg/rect to a 6v jap trials bike), the modern reg/rect can easily handle up to 80v AC and still give out the req voltage , a lower imput would not affect it much ,anything over the 80v would simply blow the reg/rect , the reg/rect is set to give the 14(ish) volts FULL STOP , no more! If you are getting 18-19v , then the unit is faulty.

Thanks Alan, certainly makes sense not much point in having a regulator if it doesn't regulate. I just hard wired in the 2 Boyers the other day otherwise I could have hooked one up to see how that reacted

Checked mine only a few weeks ago when fitting a new Bosch battery. The alternator is giving out well in access of 40 volts when revved but regulator/rectifier is working well stabilising current it at 14.3 max now. On the old gel battery I replaced it was going well above 17 volts on output as the battery was offering no resistance I think that was the problem anyway.
