Early cases didn't have the breather hole but a 65 does and 1/2 litre is capable of getting through the pumps overnight. Timing side seal can also let the oil through. Obviously the scavenge pump is fine because it is able to clear the 1/2 litre that gets in there. First step is piston at TDC, see if it still wet sumps and if it does you then have to look at other causes. My guess is through the pumps though. As for the timing seal being in back the front I have fitted them both ways and have found it makes no difference
Hi guys---------- a tad confused here as I can't see this "Bright Spot" at the top of the oil tank and that's not a Bullet 65 R/H case (as it's missing the gear shaft casting for L/H change).......................................................................................................................----------------------
Doesn't matter Alan, 4 speed/5 speed apart from the shifter shaft. The hole is a bit hard to see from that angle but if you look directly below the red ignition connector about 1.5 inches you will see a small dot, this is the crank breather hole and it is only about 3/16 inch in diameter
Hi GUYS I must thank you all for your time and comments I have now found when the forward drian plug is out and I have drained the oil to a fine run. If I turn the engine to tdc the oil stops running but just drips a bit. then when I put the piston at the bottom the oil starts to run again. SO its time to check the timing pinion seal the worm seal is new' HOPE IT'S NOT THAT GASKET.
Terry, you are not listening, has nothing to do with the quill seal, simply because you state in your first post that the oil level drops below the dipstick, that is oil tank oil, not timing chest oil
Just a point.
I know about the breather hole between the CC and oil "tank" on late models, but I had a Sixty 5 with the breather in the "old" position at the base of the barrel and "old" type filler cap. Would this have had the hole as well?
Pete i can't say for definite but would imagine they only started to drill the hole when they changed over from the barrel spigot cases..
Only way the new ones could breath else.. Fitting both together, not sure of the effect, having said that some people reinstate the old breather as the boss is still there.
