And the award for the graunchiest, crunchiest and worst gearbox in the world (with the most neutrals) goes to ..............

Effy, my 2012 500 Bullet.

Do these boxes ever smooth out??

Jim,
I can only say you have never had a 4 speed Albion, clutch adjustment is the cause of most gearbox problems

Trouble is Norm that the only adjustment on the effys is through the cable. I'm comparing it with my Bonnie which had a change as slick as an oiled snake.

If I was to make an appraisal about the machine it would be "Nice bike, shame about the gearbox", it really does let it down.

There must be something seriously amiss because my 2009 EFI box is pretty good- much better than my Electra X.Is the bike still under warranty?

My EFI 'box started crunchy, got better, and is now on the decline. It 'falls' out of gear quite a lot now, particularly from third. Not good, especially when you are accelerating away. No idea why it would do such a thing though. The change can be improved slightly with a well adjusted cable... but that doesn't stop the falling out of gear problem.

As for most neutrals... there is THE neutral, and then the one between 2 and 3, another between 3 and 4, and a final one between 4 and 5. Neutral overkill :)

Jim, bit unfair comparing anything on an Enfield to a Bonnie

I tried an EFI last year - lots of false neutrals - worse than my 04 four speed classic, which is not anywhere as good as my 52 Sunbeam, or 61 Velo. It is the one let down on what is otherwise a great bike.

To be fair to my ery good self, my Bonnie was over 40 years old. It's not unreasonable to think that gearbox technology would have advanced over that period and not marched backwards :-)

I think the collective noun for this is an "assassination of neutrals" ... (as in a murder of crows, etc.)
Perhaps it was actually the Swiss who developed this technology?
