Am working on a 2003 Indian 500 Bullet, on re-assembling the oil pump there is loads of sideways movement on the oil pump spindle. There is no sign of wear but the spindle will move 1 to 1.5mmback and forth from one pump chamber to the other.
This seems like a lot of float, does anybody know what it should be and if/how it can be adjusted ?? thanks

Is that with the pumps installed and the covers on complete with springs and gaskets? And if so, does it take a lot of force to move it?

Yes, all fully assembled with gaskets etc, slides easily back & forth

On looking the only thing that controls the float is the length of the peg at the front of the spindle. The spindle floats until the peg touches the end cap.

Its possible there should be some end float to allow for slight variations in case dimensions, i.e. worm nut and spindle alignment. also not too sure what happens when the timing cover becomes hot, does it tighten with expansion or become looser.. never checked... gwilly

I'm not sure how that can happen because with the pumps in place and with the spring pressure on both pumps the spindle can't move because it it up against the back of the scavenge pump. I would say the spring has collapsed or the spring button is missing. I can't imagine the end of the pump spindle wearing that much

springs and buttons are in place, is the spindle supposed to be held in place by the sump pump body??

Hi Duffy, the scavenge pump(front) holds the spindle in place and should be flush with the face of the housing, if the spindle isn't flush then possibly the timing cover has worn allowing the spindle to go deeper into the housing
