My 625 used to pink something terrible. I retarded the ignition and it pinked. I fitted a compression plate and it pinked when rolling-on the throttle from about 2500 rpm. It felt like it was advancing too quickly, so I bought a pair of our host's replacement advance/retard bobweight springs. They are much less compliant than the Indian originals, so they keep better control over the bobweights at lower revs. After fitting them, roll-on acceleration is much improved and there is no more pinking. A very cheap performance aid!

Another thing that is important once you start upping the compression and performance is to strobe time them. You would be surprised how far out they are with just setting them up using the TDC method. Not so critical with standard setup

My Bullet used to rev very fast when stopped anywhere after a run; apparently it was still fully advanced; after fitting new a/r springs it now ticks over like it should when idling.

I fitted a Boyer ignition to a standard bullet recently as per the fitting instructions and I was surprised how far it was out when I checked it with the strobe light

Hi Norm. Strobe timing sounds like the best way, but there are no timing marks that I know of on a classic iron-barrel engine. What do I need to do to facilitate this? Allan.

Thanks for the link Bryan. I had ignored the guide from our host's because it refers to electronic ignition, but common-sense should have told me that the same technique will work with points. Now, where did I put that degree disc that I picked-up years ago with a job-lot of tools?????

Hi Allan I just use an old CD mark 2 lines 28 degrees apart drill a hole in the line on the right near the outer edge of the disc that will line up with the stator and another hole in the line on the left about half way down the line so it will line up with the rotor, bring the motor up to TDC comp stroke, sit the disc roughly on the centre of the rotor nut and with a bit of white paint mark a dot on the stator and one on the rotor. These are your timing marks
